Justice – Essential reading for preachers

Author: Andy Peck
Twitter is a minefield. I try to be kind, measured and affirming most of the time, but sometimes it just gets the better of me. I didn’t mean to – but this week I exploded. Someone was arguing that the gospel doesn’t call Christians into the work of social justice. They were gaining support for their view that the gospel is only the death and resurrection of Christ – and that everything else is just an optional extra. Racial reconciliation, climate advocacy or poverty alleviation, for example, all activism that could be disconnected from the gospel. Of course, there are others who argue that the gospel is only about social justice and has no spiritual implications at all. But neither of these two options is faithful to Scripture. Both leave undone what the other asserts. As preachers, we need to make sure that we have a fully biblical understanding of the gospel and understand how Scripture makes sense of justice issues.
