‘Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission … to boldly go where no one has gone before.’ It’s the most famous split infinitive in contemporary culture. It also shows Captain Kirk and preachers have something in common. They’re all deeply committed to space. Of course, the space inhabited by most preachers is slightly different from that explored by James Tiberius Kirk. Preachers need to navigate their space – and take others with them.

To explore this space, I sought out Anne Dixon. Anne is an architect who’s been involved in a variety of unusual building projects with a spiritual slant – from a prayer loft to a church school. Where did she start? ‘I worked for five years as an architect before having a family,’ she says. ‘When you have a family, you see the world completely differently.
