Are you in the knowledge business?

Author: Andy Peck
Last week we called in a plumber, and a builder. And we fixed for some other tradespeople to be on standby just in case. A water leak had been detected under the concrete floor of our bathroom. Everything will need to be removed and the whole floor dug up. It’s not what we need right now.  Isn’t it good when somebody knows what they are doing? How glad I am that the plumber and his mates have real substantial knowledge of their trades. The same goes for our f inancial advisor who we are seeing shortly about the various life choices that we’re facing. Fortunately for us, she doesn’t say that she’s lucky with investments or that her track record is a fluke. She really does know her onions.   Knowledge is the thing. At the local school or college, they are in the knowledge transfer business, teaching about the world and how to live in it. They know stuff. If, in the midst of a cost of living crisis, we know where the best bargains can be found, then we tell our friends.   If, in a pandemic, we have found a cure for COVID-19, then we have a duty to share that knowledge with others. Of course, that wouldn’t be true of our mere opinions, feelings or decisions about anything.  These are some of the big questions, about how to live well, with which secular humanity and government arrangements are trying to grapple with ever greater intensity. If we are going to ‘give peace a chance’ in Eastern Europe or anywhere else, then we need to know about the workings of the human heart and how to change it.
