The Old Testament still works – who doesn’t love a throwback?

My children were given one of those cute picture Bibles when they were born. It’s great because it has given me the opportunity to revisit some of the stories in the Old Testament through that Sunday School lens. We read about how God wonderfully placed the stars in the sky; how he positioned the universe to reflect his glory; and how he made all the little girls and little boys. Together, we’ll sing ‘He’s got the whole world in his hands’… and it all sounds really lovely. However, as we grow in life and faith, we can admit there are some darker places in the Old Testament, accounts that we tend to avoid as we focus on the miracles in the New Testament. As we look closer, however, what do those controversial moments tell us about our God and how we should communicate the fullness of the Gospel?
