A ll the stories we take in on the big screen are built around patterns and archetypes. Christopher Vogler, whose book The Writer’s Journey is considered a screenwriting bible, suggests the most common action hero story looks like this: there’s a hero, who, in answer to a sense of calling, must leave their comforts behind and undertake a challenging mission. They will go through temptation, meeting friends and enemies along the way. The hero is destined to go through a terrible ordeal, leading literally or metaphorically to their death – and ultimately, to triumph through a victorious resurrection. Starting to sound familiar yet? It’s not exactly hard to find Christological analogies in cinema. One go-to example for many Christians doing cultural engagement is the 1994 classic The Shawshank Redemption.
