Meet your MP

Author: Andy Peck
How do you get your local MP to listen to the issues of peace and justice which your congregation are passionate about? How do you encourage your congregation to engage in the issues which are also on God’s heart: for those who are marginalised, on the outside, living in poverty? The Joint Public Issues Team (JPIT) has devised the ‘Meet Your MP’ resource, to enable just that. Here are the stories of two churches that took the plunge to meet their MP.  Who met who?   Wilmslow Methodist Church meets Esther McVey MP.   Who organised it?   Rev Katy Thomas.  How did it feel?   I admit to feeling slightly daunted at meeting our MP but she made us feel at ease!   Why did you do it?   At the Methodist Women in Britain Conference 2018, JPIT spoke about Universal Credit and the way it was having a negative impact on some of the most vulnerable members of our society. We were challenged to get involved in ‘craftivism’, expressing our concerns by sewing messages on a napkin. We were invited to post the napkins to our MP or arrange to give them in person. Spurred on by those from my churches who had also attended, we arranged to meet our MP, Esther McVey.  What did you do to prepare?
