Kristi Mair – Finding truth in a post-truth world

Author: Andy Peck
‘What is truth?’ It’s a question most famously asked by a Roman governor standing in front of a beaten and broken Jewish man, while a crowd stood around, baying for his crucifixion. The notion of truth remains just as contested today. The rise of a post modern approach to life has birthed a relativistic approach to the nature of reality. As the title of The Manic Street Preachers 1998 album put it: ‘This Is My Truth. Tell Me Yours’. Alongside this, the rise of social media has fuelled an ever-greater distrust of traditional sources of information. Conspiracy theories, biased reporting and hearsay have been given a new lease of life in the age of the Internet.  In 2016 the Oxford Dictionary even declared ‘post-truth’ as its ‘word of the year’. It came at a time when similar phrases such as ‘fake news’ and ‘alternative facts’ were flying around in the wake of the election of a certain US President.   What’s the overall aim of your book, Kristi?   It centres on the question of ‘How can we know what is true?’ How can a Christian, in light of a post-truth context, actually have any confidence that the claims of Christ stand up to scrutiny? In very short chapters, the book looks at how we can know Christ is the truth in light of society and the pressures that Christians may face today.   You are a millennial. What is the approach among your peers to the notion of truth?
