Interactive preaching and what Jesus knew about persuading your brain

A hush sweeps the hall as the 40-something man at the front loosens his shoes. His name’s Brian. He’s a youth leader on a camp in Yorkshire. And he’s about to shout at his shoes. Taking them off, he places his footwear on the table. One hundred pairs of young eyes follow his every move. Silence. Empty shoes, sat on a table. His shout breaks the hush – a few young people jump as he commands his lifeless shoes: ‘Walk! Now! You were made to move – so do it!’
ASK GOD TO GIVE YOU THE PICTURE OF WHAT HE WANTS YOU TO PREACH ON. THAT WILL ALLOW EASY TRANSLATION OF THE MESSAGE.
In any other context he’d be carted off and cared for. Not here. Though shouting at his shoes, he’s not crazed. No. Creative? Very. In fact, despite the intense silence in that hall, this is one of the most interactive sermons I’ll ever experience. As the response afterwards suggests, God is interacting with oodles of people, facilitated by how Brian framed his message.
