How I prepare by Rev Johnny Pozzo | Issue 06

BACKGROUND
This sermon is on 1 Kings 19 and is set within a preaching series entitled ‘The Life of Elijah’. When I was on sabbatical in November 2014, I spent some of the time seeking God for vision for the coming year for our community and praying about what areas of Scripture to preach from in 2015. I felt prompted to look at Elijah: what lessons could be learned from his life, his encounters with God and the times he lived in. I planned the outline of the series and then developed it later in 2015. The Sunday morning message on 8 November 2015 was Week 5 – ‘Defeating Discouragement’.
READING AND RESEARCH
As this was part of a series, I spent a few weeks reading and pondering on 1 Kings 17 – 2 Kings 2 each day. I found these Bible commentaries helpful in my preparation: c 1 & 2 Kings (NIV Application Commentary) by August H Konkel c 1 and 2 Kings (Tyndale Commentary) by Donald J Wiseman. I also read these inspirational books: c Elijah: A man of heroism and humility by Charles Swindoll c Elijah by FB Meyer.
