PLANNING TO PREACH
How I prepare for my sermons is a three-step process. Firstly, I will read up on the subject or topic from the Bible that I am required to preach about. My favourite thing to do is to cross-reference different scriptures and translations before running with the version that gives me revelation or resonates with me.
Secondly, I seek out the ‘old paths’ (Jeremiah 6:16) as I believe there is nothing new under the sun. One of the unique things about my church is that our founding pastor, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, has an extensive book ministry so we preach from the Bible and one of his books. I will often use YouTube or Podcast to search for a message already preached by our founder or other pastors to give me further understanding and inspiration on how I can also preach that message.
Thirdly, I like to pray specifically and do my own study on what I have read and the revelation I have received and jot it down. I copy the structure of what is listed in the book’s subheadings to give me the points to preach and underneath each I add what I have noted personally. I am also an avid user of ‘windows’ (word pictures) which add colour and life to my messages and also enables the congregation to relate to me as a preacher but also to draw parallels in their own lives and Christian walks.
