Imagine shopping for your family according to your budget, meeting with friendly faces (with tea and cake), letting your children play as noisily as they like – and imagine a place where you are warmly welcomed, treated with equality, and invited to access further support if you need it. Take all that away and it will expose a situation where you are disempowered, embarrassed, lonely and desperately worried about feeding, clothing and even housing your children. Worse – you’re probably in debt, stuck in the Universal Credit system, and are developing physical or mental health issues.
We hear from two people who, led by God, work at the front line of providing support to our friends and neighbours who live in poverty in the UK. David Tuckett volunteers in Sheffield for Christians against Poverty and Viki Watts works in Gloucestershire for Stroud District Kids Stuff.
Chaos in people’s lives I started writing this before the full effect of the Covid-19 virus impacted upon our lives here and in most of the rest of the world. The chaos I intended to explore was then restricted to part of our society. It is now likely that chaos will form at least a part of most people’s lives for some months to come.
