Books for life – See one. Do one. Teach one

Author: Andy Peck
A surgeon once told me that in the medical world they have a simple maxim when it comes to learning medical procedures: See one. Do one. Teach one. Apart from the unnerving thought that the next operation I need might involve a rookie surgeon trying something out for the first time, I really like the learning model. It encourages the idea of apprenticeship for a start. It recognises that we learn not just from books but from observing the way others perform their craft, and teaching others. It encourages participative learning – there are some things you can only master by doing. It also taps into the viral nature of learning – that we should be looking for opportunities to pass on any skills that we learn.  I rejoice when I find preachers that have adopted these attitudes to their craft. Preachers who are willing to learn from others, give things a go and then pass on what they have learned. Not just once, but over and over again as a continuous cycle of development. I want to suggest four books that could spark this cycle. They are not books about preaching, but books that model preaching in print. Read one, then do one and teach one.
