Behind the headlines: UK Poverty is a choice

Author: Andy Peck
Preachers well versed in biblical exposition and its application can often feel intimidated allowing contemporary politics into the pulpit, feeling unequipped or unqualified to handle such sensitive issues, or vulnerable to criticism from some who might assume they are ‘taking sides’. Yet Jesus himself, and the Gospel still, speaks Truth to Power. By steering clear of political comment, we may miss the opportunity to show the relevancy of Christianity in all areas of life, stifle the voice of the church in speaking against injustice, and unwittingly deprive our congregations of an opportunity to see the political headlines they are bombarded with daily in the light of Christ’s Kingdom.  The Joint Public Issues Team (JPIT) seeks to unpack the issues of peace and justice seen on our screens and in our newspapers, to enable pastors, preachers and their congregations to be informed, and to reflect and respond with hope. Here follows an article which first appeared on the JPIT blog in November 2018, with the aim of shedding light on the headline that ‘UK Poverty is a choice’.
