In conversation with Harvey Kwiyani

Author: Andy Peck
Dr Harvey Kwiyani is an academic and mission practitioner with experience in the UK, Europe and the US. Prior to becoming Chief Executive Officer at Global Connections, he was a lecturer in African Christianity and Theology at Liverpool Hope University. Harvey is founder and director of Missio Africanus (missioafricanus.com) and editor of its Journal of African Missiology. Harvey is an author, known for his book Multicultural Kingdom, with Africa Bears Witness to be published shortly. We are delighted that Harvey has joined the board of trustees at LWPT, publishers of Preach magazine.  LL You joined Global Connections as CEO in September 2021. It sounds like an exciting role – could you describe it?   It is exciting and a challenge but God will make it work. My role is to lead Global Connections to build relational networks within its member organisations, and to provide a sense of theological and missiological leadership.   Part of the reason that I was interested in the job is because the whole world of mission is going through a difficult season of change. While Christianity has flourished in other parts of the world, here in Europe it has diminished over the past decades. The numbers of people who want to become missionaries and who want to support missionaries financially are shrinking as well. Case in point, Africa has more Christians than Europe today. The expanding church in London is largely black because African Christians have found their way to the UK. So, we definitely have to rethink mission and be more intentional about bringing in global voices, exchanging culture and ideas, and understanding different faith perspectives.
