The Art of the Possible: how to engage with politics

Author: Andy Peck
Does politics have a role in the church or is it a distraction from our mission? Is politics about compromise and how does that square with our Christian faith, which is often centred around truth? At a time when a lot of people say they are turned off by politics, many in our churches are still concerned about what is going on in our world. What does politics mean for our faith – and what should our faith mean for our politics?  ‘The Art of the Possible’ is a resource developed by the Joint Public Issues Team for leaders to use in their churches. It is to help congregations engage in political reflection and action while remaining anchored in Christian principles.  Here are a few excerpts on ways that you can begin to relate to your MP: Get to know your MP – visit your MP in Parliament or at their constituency office (details will be on their website or in the local phone book). Even better, invite them along to an event at your church, perhaps a special service or community event, or to visit a social project like a playgroup or a night shelter that you organise. And if they can’t come, invite them again.
