Preaching and personality

Author: Andy Peck
In an ideal world, preaching should primarily be about the message not the messenger, about the scriptures rather than the speaker, about the content of the sermon more than its composer. However, we are probably all aware of situations in which the preacher’s personality and personal charisma matter a great deal.  In such instances the preacher may be a minor celebrity, a charismatic figure who wows the crowds with rhetoric, and no small amount of emotional manipulation.   The harsh reality, of course, is that there is no neat divide between the medium and the message in authentic preaching. Indeed, in many cases the medium is the message.   Here’s a confession: I am often bored by preaching. I mean the preaching of others rather than my own. Though I admit that there have been times either whilst preparing, but even worse, once or twice while preaching, I’ve thought to myself ‘This is boring stuff!’
