The benefits of personality profiling

Author: Andy Peck
Over the years I’ve been Myers-Brigged, had my Enneagram tested, looked deep into my Dark Side and grappled with Insight Discovery. All of these psychometric tests, and others besides, have been hugely helpful in my self-awareness and fruitfulness in ministry. But it’s been a long journey.  As a young leader I was pathologically opposed to anything remotely psychological or self-analytical. If I met a psychotherapist at an event I would immediately shrink away, not wanting to be exposed in front of, well, a shrink. Surely they would see right through me?   Now, several years later, and through the persistence and generosity of several employers, I have embraced personality testing and what the professionals call psychoanalytical tools. I’m not yet a junkie for them, but I’m certainly evangelical about their beneficial properties. Sure, they have their flaws, and I wish that there were some really good products and programmes that had stronger Christian foundations. Nevertheless, psychological profiles have their place and can greatly help in personal development and strengthening teams.
