Born in Durham, Myrtle Poxon went to theological college aged 20 before being ordained as a deacon in the Methodist church. She spent seven years working as a Methodist mission partner in Jamaica (1979-85), before serving at churches in Cardiff and Preston.
Mrs Poxon was Vice President of Conference in 2004 and President of the Methodist Women’s Network in 1991-92. She is a member of the Methodist Council and is also part of Methodism’s Connexional Candidates Committee. Married to Stephen, with four adult children, she is currently a minister in London.
I was 19 when I first stood in the pulpit seeking to lead people in worship and share a message that hopefully would enable those gathered to encounter God. I felt somewhat inadequate, more than a little nervous yet overwhelmed with the sense that as a preacher one was a channel and not the focus. So many years later (too many to say) I continue to feel the same inadequacies and nervousness but also the excitement and privilege of leading people to encounter God.
