What I’ve learnt: The wisdom of a seasoner preacher

Paul Slater spent the first 60 years of his life in Southampton where he was a member of the Methodist Central Hall and was very involved in the Boys’ Brigade. He was a student at Cliff College in 1962–63 and was accredited as a local preacher in 1963. He spent most of his working life involved with sport and has now retired to Malta. He has been preaching regularly for 52 years.  In my early days as a Methodist local preacher, my sermons tended to be theme-based: I would, for example, preach on the subject of God’s love and bring in a few verses of Scripture to make my point. The sermon would last for at least 30 minutes and the hymns did not necessarily fit into a pattern for the act of worship as a whole.
