Preaching Problems: Advice from our panel | Issue 06

In this article, we hear from three church leaders about a fictional (although familiar) situation and how they might approach the scenario. THE SCENARIO I am part of a small community church, where it is a case of ‘all hands on deck’. I have been a Christian for around ten years now, but I still feel there is a lot I have to learn. Recently, our pastor asked me if I would consider doing some preaching. He has another part-time job and a lot on his plate. I think he just needs someone to share the load and there aren’t that many people he could ask. I want to say yes to help him out, but I really don’t feel I have the knowledge or experience to do it. Frankly, the very thought of it terrifies me! Do you think preaching can be done by anyone willing to give it a go? Or am I right to feel it is perhaps not something I should agree to do? RICHARD LITTLEDALE Like you say, one of the advantages of being in a small community is that you can all pitch in and help each other out. I suspect that you all know quite a lot about each other’s strengths and weaknesses! My first piece of advice would be to see if there are any other things on the pastor’s plate that you could lift off for him? If so, then that might leave him more time for preaching himself.
